mermaid day parade...

On June 21st, I was finally able to experience what i have heard about for years, the Mermaid Day Parade. I was a very interesting and enjoyable experience. For those of you who don't know what the Mermaid Parade is, it takes place in Coney Island where during the summer, there is a carnival that is open every day! Tons of people gather together, dress up in mermaid costumes, or other ocean related outfits and parade themselves to hundreds of onlookers. Many,....and I mean MANY bare chested women represent every single year and walking around, acting as if they are not half naked. Don't be mistaken, this is an actual parade. There are floats and banners involved, as well as mardi gras beads being thrown left and right.

i arrived just as the parade was ending, but walking around all day is the most enjoyable part. All of the parade participants walk around in their outfits, some of them body painted from head to toe literally melting in the sun as the day went on. We stopped for some famous Nathan's hot dogs and cheese fries after having already drinken more than we should have before 3 pm. I wanted to lay out in the sun, but the group wanted to check out a new skate shop that had just opened up in the neighborhood. A friend of mine, Joey Perez was born and raised out in Coney Island, so he knows his way around and knows all th people. We checked out the skate shop which was called Invert, and it was meant to be an upside down store. the door and counters were upside down and random things were pasted to the ceiling that should have been on the floor. When we got back to the "fair" area of Coney everyone wanted to go on some rides. I was the only person who did not. I very much dislike rides, with a passion. So I opted for the always enjoyable cotton candy fix, then later a corn on the cob. I love fair food. All in all a great day out in Coney Island. A bunch of us got together and spent a whole day walking around and enjoying our day out of the city. It's always nice to feel like you're away for a while, even if just for one day. And Coney always feels like a while different world. I love it.

Here are some images I pulled from a few websites. My pictures aren't so great.
